Taxonomy and Nomenclature

Marosa is identified as Pfaffia iresinoides (Kunth) Spreng., a member of the Amaranthaceae (the amaranth family). The identification rests on a strong and consistent consensus among ethnobotanical and practitioner sources working directly with Shipibo lineages, rather than on a formal taxonomic monograph; no competing scientific name appears in the literature we have reviewed. The genus Pfaffia is best known through P. paniculata and P. glomerata, the South American roots marketed as "Brazilian ginseng" (Li et al., 2009).

In the Shipibo language the plant is called Chaikuni (or Chaiconi) and Onanyati rao ("plant of the one who knows"); it is also affectionately called Mamasita. The name is more than a label. In Shipibo cosmology the chaiconibo (or chai coni) are mythical, highly skilled forest-and-water beings — los encantados, "the enchanted ones" — with whom master healers (onanya and meraya) are said to commune for help in curing (Tournon et al.; Kuijper, 2021). Tournon traces the word to chai ("brother-in-law") and coni ("electric eel," locally macana) — an explicitly aquatic association (Tournon et al.). The plant's enduring link to water and to enchanted helping-spirits therefore has roots in genuine Shipibo ethnography, not only in contemporary retreat literature.

Botanical Description and Habitat

Pfaffia iresinoides is a perennial herb to scrambling subshrub of the neotropics, typical of riverbanks, clearings and disturbed ground in the western Amazon — an ecology consistent with the plant's traditional association with water. Formal botanical description of the species is sparse, and herbarium voucher confirmation is advisable where botanical accuracy matters (the genus contains several superficially similar species). The part used in the dieta is generally reported to be the fresh leaves.

Active Compounds

The phytochemistry of P. iresinoides has been studied only lightly, and mostly some decades ago. The documented constituents are ecdysteroids — ecdysterone (20-hydroxyecdysone), polypodine B and pterosterone — together with an ecdysteroid/triterpene saponin, chikusetsusaponin IVa (Nishimoto et al., 1987, 1988), and a yellow flavonoid pigment named iresinoside (Shiobara et al., 1992). This profile is consistent with the wider genus: P. paniculata ("Brazilian ginseng") yields pfaffic acid, pfaffoside saponins and ecdysteroids including 20-hydroxyecdysone (Li et al., 2009).

Two honest caveats follow from this. First, there is no clinical pharmacology specific to P. iresinoides; ecdysteroids and saponins are biologically interesting (ecdysteroids are widely studied for adaptogen-like and anabolic effects in animal and in-vitro models), but evidence for this species in humans is essentially absent. Second, popular descriptions of Marosa as a proven "adaptogen," "aphrodisiac" or "rejuvenator" are extrapolated from the better-studied congeners rather than established for the species itself. There is nothing here that acts as a hallucinogen or an MAO inhibitor.

Traditional & Spiritual Properties

In the Shipibo-Konibo world the medicinal plants that teach are rao — and the "master" or teacher plants (ibo rao) are those a healer diets to receive knowledge, songs and protection (Kuijper, 2021; Luna, 1984). Marosa is counted among these teaching plants. Its character, as described across the tradition and by contemporary practitioners, is gentle and inward: it is worked with not for purging or for visions but for the emotional and energetic body.

The healing reputation is strikingly consistent: Marosa is sought as a plant of the heart — for grief, abandonment, heartbreak and the recovery of self-worth — and is said to foster compassion, forgiveness and a balance of masculine and feminine energy. It is linked to the element of water and to a nurturing feminine spirit; dieters report visions of great river serpents, and the plant's "mother" is often named as the anaconda.

It is worth noting that the now-common framing of Marosa as a "heart-opening plant of love" belongs largely to contemporary retreat and practitioner literature rather than to the older ethnographic record; we report it as present-day practitioner usage rather than documented classical Shipibo tradition.

Use in Dieta

Marosa is engaged through the dieta (sama): an extended, secluded period of communion with the plant spirit, taking a preparation of the plant — usually the fresh leaves — while observing strict restrictions on salt, sugar, oils, spices, red meat, alcohol, sexual activity and social contact (Luna, 1984; Jauregui et al., 2011). These austerities are understood not as arbitrary rules but as the conditions that make a person sensitive enough to receive the plant's teaching.

Marosa is widely described as a gentle, early-stage diet — one of the first plants an apprentice or patient may work with, to "open" the body and mind softly and prepare for deeper work with stronger medicines. Its action is subtle: rather than the dramatic purges of some Amazonian plants, its work is reported to unfold quietly and largely through dreams.

Classification: An Open Question

Marosa's standing within the menor ("lesser") / mayor ("greater") framework is genuinely unsettled — so rather than choose one, we think it more honest to show the disagreement and its sources:

  • SoulLiana has, until now, listed Marosa as menor — a gentler, often early-stage diet.
  • A number of contemporary practitioner and retreat-centre sources treat it as a mayor master plant in its own right.
  • In Arévalo Valera's (1994) typology of Shipibo master plants, marosa is grouped among the "hallucinogen" teaching plants, alongside toé, chiri-sanango and tobacco. This is best read as a class of visionary teaching plants — whose lessons come through the dream-and-vision process of the dieta — rather than a claim of pharmacological hallucinogenicity, which Marosa's known chemistry does not support.
  • Marosa does not appear among the 55 species documented in the peer-reviewed survey of Jauregui et al. (2011).

These differences may themselves be telling. The menor/mayor distinction is lineage-dependent and relational, not a fixed global hierarchy — a plant's standing can legitimately vary between maestros, schools and regions.

A note from the author. I am travelling to Peru to diet Marosa myself in August 2026, with the maestros I work with. I would rather be honest that I don't yet know its place in their lineage than feign a certainty I don't have — so I will ask them directly, and update this page with what I learn.

Safety

Unlike the ayahuasca-related plants on this site, Marosa is not a DMT- or MAOI-containing plant, so the serotonin-syndrome and controlled-substance concerns that apply to the brew do not apply to Marosa itself. That said, formal safety data are minimal:

  • Little species-specific data. No clinical toxicology exists for P. iresinoides. Its known constituents (ecdysteroids, saponins) are generally of low acute toxicity, but "traditionally used" is not the same as "studied as safe."
  • The real risks are misidentification and overclaiming. Several plants share folk names and appearance; sourcing the correct species matters. And many marketed health claims are genus-level extrapolation, not evidence for this plant.
  • General prudence. As with any dieta plant, work with an experienced practitioner; the greatest practical risk lies in an improperly conducted dieta rather than in the plant's pharmacology. Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding (no data), and discuss any regular medication with a qualified professional.

Pfaffia iresinoides is not a controlled substance in any jurisdiction known to the author; it contains no scheduled compounds. It is available commercially as a dried herb and as tinctures. As always, verify local regulations before engaging with plant medicine.

Research Status

Species-specific research on P. iresinoides is sparse and dated — a small body of phytochemical work from the late 1980s and early 1990s establishing its ecdysteroid and saponin content (Nishimoto et al., 1987, 1988; Shiobara et al., 1992), with little since. The pharmacology of the wider genus (P. paniculata, P. glomerata) is better characterised (Li et al., 2009; Ribeiro et al., 2024) but cannot simply be assumed to transfer. Robust ethnographic documentation of Marosa within Shipibo practice — as distinct from contemporary retreat literature — also remains thin. Voucher-specimen confirmation and species-level study would both be valuable.
